History Of Jammu(Pre to 18th CE)

History of Jammu Dogra dynasty notes for JKSSB exams

The History of Jammu is one of the most frequently asked topics in Jammu & Kashmir Static GK. Recruitment exams such as JKSSB, Police, Patwari and JKPSC regularly include questions from the rulers of Jammu, especially the Dev (Dogra) period.


Candidates preparing across Jammu And Kashmir often notice that at least 2–4 questions in recruitment papers come directly from this topic.

Below is a simplified and exam-oriented explanation of Jammu’s historical development.


Origin of Jammu (Legendary Period)

According to traditional accounts, Jammu was founded by Raja Jambu Lochan.

Legend states that he saw a lion and a goat drinking water peacefully together on the bank of the Tawi River. Considering the place sacred, he established a settlement called Jambu Nagar, which later became Jammu.

His brother Bahu Lochan constructed the famous Bahu Fort.

Important Fact:
Jammu developed along the Tawi River and later became known as the City of Temples.

Manda (Akhnoor)

Suryavanshi Rulers

These rulers are believed to be descendants of Lord Rama.

  • Founder: Raja Adi Rai

Dev (Dogra) Dynasty — Most Important for Exams

The Dev dynasty ruled Jammu roughly between the 9th and 19th centuries and laid the foundation of organized Dogra rule.

Founder — Raja Suraj Dev (c. 840 CE)

He established stable administration in Jammu.

Timur’s Invasion

During the later Dev period, Timur invaded the region.
Several forts were attacked and political instability increased in Jammu.


Raja Ranjit Dev (1733–1782) — Most Important Ruler

Raja Ranjit Dev is one of the most important rulers of Jammu.

Achievements

  • Promoted religious tolerance

  • Hindus and Muslims lived peacefully

  • Jammu called Dar-ul-Aman (Abode of Peace)

  • Encouraged trade and settlement

  • Provided refuge to traders and migrants

  • Opposed social evils such as female infanticide and discouraged Sati

During his reign Jammu became a major trade centre between Punjab and Kashmir.


Sikh Conquest of Jammu

After Ranjit Dev, weak rulers followed.

Raja Jeet Dev was defeated by the Sikh forces of Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab in the early 19th century.

During this period, a Dogra noble Gulab Singh gained importance in the Sikh army.


Rise of Dogra Rule

Gulab Singh later became the founder of the Dogra State of Jammu & Kashmir in 1846, leading to the formation of the princely state.
