National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries & Biosphere Reserves of Jammu & Kashmir

Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory is a Himalayan biodiversity hotspot with ecosystems ranging from coniferous forests and alpine meadows to wetlands. After the 2019 reorganization (J&K and Ladakh becoming separate Union Territories), J&K protects wildlife through National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries and Conservation Reserves.

Approximately 4907 sq km (about 11.6% of the UT area) is under protected area network (Wildlife Protected Area Network Atlas, 2021).

Key Highlights

  • 4 National Parks – strict protection
  • 14 Wildlife Sanctuaries – protection with limited regulated activities
  • 16 Conservation Reserves – buffer/link zones
  • No officially designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve fully in J&K UT

This topic is extremely important for JKSSB (Forest Guard, Wildlife Guard, Class IV, Patwari, Police, FAA), JKPSC and school exams.

Exam Tip: J&K protects biodiversity through National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Ramsar sites and Conservation Reserves — not biosphere reserves.

Conservation Importance

These protected areas help in:

  • Hangul conservation (Dachigam & Overa-Aru)
  • Markhor recovery (Kazinag, Lachipora, Limber)
