2 District-by-District Deep Dive
Srinagar is the largest city and summer capital of the Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory. It lies on the banks of the Jhelum River at an elevation of about 1,585 metres. The city is world-famous for its Dal Lake with its iconic houseboats and shikaras, and for the magnificent Mughal Gardens — Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, and Chashme Shahi. Hari Parbat hill and the Shankaracharya Temple overlook the city.
Baramulla is historically known as the Gateway of Kashmir — the Jhelum River exits the valley through Baramulla before crossing into Pakistan-administered territory. It is home to Gulmarg, the famous ski resort and one of the highest golf courses in the world, situated at around 2,650 metres. The district also includes Uri town, strategically important and known for the Uri hydroelectric project.
Anantnag is the largest district of South Kashmir and a major cultural and commercial hub. The Jhelum River originates from the spring at Verinag in this district — one of the most historically significant springs in Kashmir, developed by Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Pahalgam is the base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage and one of Kashmir's most scenic hill stations. The ancient Martand Sun Temple built by King Lalitaditya (8th century) is also located here.
Kupwara is the northernmost district of Kashmir Division, sharing a long border with the Line of Control (LoC). The district is drained by the Kishanganga River (known as Neelam in Pakistan). The scenic Lolab Valley and Bangus Valley are popular tourist spots known for their meadows and forests. Handwara is the second-largest town and a key sub-divisional headquarters.
Pulwama is famous for its saffron cultivation — the prized Kashmiri saffron (Kesar) grows in the Pampore area of this district. It is one of the world's finest and most expensive saffron producing regions. Pulwama also has significant apple orchards. The ruins of Awantipora, a 9th-century city built by King Avantivarman, are a major historical site. The district is drained by several tributaries of the Jhelum.
Budgam is the district closest to Srinagar (just 11 km away) and houses the Srinagar International Airport — the only airport in the Kashmir Valley. The district was carved out of Srinagar district in 1979. It is known for the Hokersar Wetland, a Ramsar-designated wetland that serves as a crucial habitat for migratory birds. Tourist places include Yusmarg (meadow of flowers) and the lush Doodhpathri (Valley of Milk).
Bandipora is home to Wular Lake — the largest freshwater lake in South Asia and the largest lake in J&K. Wular is fed by the Jhelum River and is a critically important ecosystem. The district is also drained by the Kishanganga River. The remote and beautiful Gurez Valley lies in the northern part of the district, adjacent to the LoC. Bandipora was carved out of Baramulla district in 2006.
Ganderbal district was carved out of Srinagar district in 2007. It is the gateway to Sonamarg (Meadow of Gold), one of Kashmir's most popular hill stations and the starting point for the Zojila Pass route to Ladakh. The district is drained by the Sind River. Mansabal Lake — a freshwater lake known as the deepest lake in J&K — is located here. The Amarnath Yatra route via Baltal also passes through Ganderbal.
Shopian is known as the Apple Bowl of Jammu & Kashmir for its extremely high apple production — it contributes the highest percentage of apple output in the entire union territory. The district was carved from Pulwama in 2007 and is the smallest district of Kashmir Division by area. Kaunsarnag Lake, a high-altitude alpine lake also known as the Lake of Cows, is a major natural attraction located in the Pir Panjal mountains within this district.
Kulgam is located in South Kashmir, about 68 km from Srinagar, and was separated from Anantnag district in 2007. The district is drained by the Vishav River. The spectacular Aharbal Waterfall, often called the Niagara of Kashmir, is located on the Vishav River and is one of the most visited natural attractions in South Kashmir. Kulgam is also the birthplace of Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani (Alamdar-e-Kashmir), the patron saint of Kashmir.
