Jammu & Kashmir GI Tags 2026: Over 25 Registered Products – Massive Push to Protect Heritage from Fakes

📰 Current Affairs | 📅 9 April 2026 | 🎯 For JKPSC, JKSSB, UPSC & Competitive Exams

In a landmark initiative, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has secured Geographical Indication (GI) registration for 18 traditional handicrafts and several agricultural products in a single aggressive drive. This massive push aims to protect the unique cultural heritage of the region from cheap machine-made imitations flooding the market.

As of April 2026, J&K now boasts over 25 registered GI tags — a significant jump from previous years. The list has expanded rapidly, especially with additions in 2024–2026, balancing both Kashmir and Jammu divisions.

GI tags not only give legal protection but also boost market value, promote tourism, and ensure authentic products reach genuine buyers.

🏛️ What is a GI Tag and Why Does It Matter for J&K?

A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation due to that origin. Under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, only authorised users from the specific region can use the tag.

For J&K, GI tags are crucial because:

  • They safeguard centuries-old traditional crafts and unique agricultural produce.
  • They fight duplication — especially machine-made shawls, carpets, and souvenirs sold as “Kashmiri”.
  • They enhance export potential and artisan incomes.

The J&K government has introduced QR code-based GI authentication labels. Over 70,000 products have already been tagged with QR codes for easy verification by customers.

🌟 Key Highlights of the Recent GI Push

1. Jammu Division’s Strong Entry

For decades, most GI tags were concentrated in the Kashmir Valley. The recent additions have brought balance:

  • Basohli Paintings (Kathua)
  • Bhaderwah Rajmash (Doda)
  • Udhampur Kalari (Udhampur)
  • Rajouri Chikri Wood Craft
  • Jammu Basmati Rice (2026)

2. 2025–2026 Big Boost for Handicrafts

In one major drive, the government secured GI for 15–18 crafts, including:

  • Namda, Gabba, Shikara, Kashmir Willow Bat, Wagguv, Tweed, Crewel Embroidery, Chain Stitch

These additions directly support thousands of artisans and help revive near-extinct crafts.

3. Quality Control & Authentication

The J&K Handicrafts and Handloom Department now uses QR code-based GI labels. Customers can scan and verify authenticity instantly, reducing the risk of buying fakes.

💰 Economic & Cultural Impact

  • Artisan Empowerment: Higher prices for genuine products, better livelihoods for weavers, carvers, and farmers.
  • Tourism Boost: GI-tagged items become unique souvenirs for visitors to Kashmir and Jammu.
  • Global Market: Easier access to international buyers who prefer certified authentic products.
  • Protection from Imitation: Legal backing against machine-made duplicates from other states or countries.

The government is also working on brand promotion through exhibitions, e-commerce platforms, and tie-ups with big retailers.
